Emperor Montezuma II
(born c.1480 reigned 1502-1520)

Aztec Emperor Montezuma II

"The divine drink, which builds up resistance and fights fatigue.
A cup of this precious drink
[cocoa] permits a man
to walk for a whole day without food."

Montezuma II
(1502-1520)

In his History of the Conquest of Mexico (1838), William Hickling relates how Aztec Emperor Montezuma "took no other beverage than the chocolatl, a potation of chocolate, flavored with vanilla and spices, and so prepared as to be reduced to a froth of the consistency of honey, which gradually dissolved in the mouth and was taken cold." Montezuma served chocolatl in a golden goblet to his nemesis, the conquistador Hernan Cortes.
